ADA Baby Changing Station Requirements
1. Accessible Operation
- The ADA baby changing station must be operable with one hand.
- No tight grasping, pinching, or wrist twisting should be required.
- The force needed to open or close the unit must not exceed 5 pounds.
2. Height of ADA Baby Changing Station
- The changing surface should be between 28 and 34 inches above the floor.
- The highest operable part (typically the handle) must be no higher than 48 inches from the ground.
3. Clear Floor Space
- A forward approach is required, with proper knee and toe clearance:
- Minimum 27 inches of knee height clearance.
- Minimum 17 inches of toe clearance (19 inches in California).
- A clear width of 30 inches for knee and toe space.
4. Unobstructed Access & Location
- The station must be on a clear, accessible route at least 36 inches wide.
- It cannot interfere with door maneuvering spaces or reduce the accessible path when open.
- ADA baby changing stations must not be inside an accessible stall.
