ADA Urinal Requirements

Why Do ADA Urinal Requirements Matter?

In the United States, business owners that provide restrooms for customers and the public are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA laws that regulate their facilities and specifically ADA urinal requirements.  These laws are in place to protect individuals who have disabilities so that they have equal access to bathroom facilities.   The ADA and the CBC or California building code layout the requirements necessary to be accessible.

What is an Accessible Urinal?

An ADA accessible urinal is a urinal that can be used with relative ease by an individual with a disability. Bathrooms have many different elements that can make or break a property’s accessibility. Urinals, toilets, bathroom stalls,  and lavatories all have legal requirements in place to make use possible by those with disabilities. Accessible urinals are required in addition to toilets because a portion of all elements in a bathroom must be accessible when provided.

How Can I Meet ADA Urinal Requirements?

In order to make a urinal accessible you have to focus on the clear floor space, the height of the urinal,  the depth of the urinal from the back wall,  the flush control position,  and distance from any walls or bathroom stalls.

Urinal Height Requirements

In order for a urinal to be accessible, the rim of the urinal cannot exceed 17” above the finished floor according to the ADA.

Urinal Clear Floor Space

An accessible urinal requires a clear floor space that is 30″ wide by 48″ deep.  this floor space creates a clear area for a wheelchair user to approach and use the urinal.  In addition to the urinal clear floor space, the slope of the floor must not exceed 2% in any direction to prevent any instability.

ADA Urinal Requirements: Flush Control

ADA urinal requirements state that flush control are required to be operable with one hand and without requiring any tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.  In addition to its operation, the height of the flush control is not allowed to exceed 44″ above the finished floor.
